Welcome

I have been working on South Africa over the last 14 years – for several German media and as a political scientist at the University of Aachen.

I was born on the 18th November 1969 in Aachen, finished high-school there (1989) and started university in 1990 after my military service. I finished my studies in political science, history and international relations in 1997/8 with a thesis on the “Process of Reconciliation in Nelson Mandela´s New South Africa – the Impact of Sport on Nation-building”. Afterwards I stayed at the University of Aachen in order to do my PhD in political science and wrote a book with the title: “From Apartheid to Democracy. The Political Transformation of South Africa.” (2003) Several studies on modern day South Africa followed and I have been teaching international politics ever since.

Apart from my focus on South Africa, I have always been working as a sports-journalist. Starting at local level with newspaper- and radio-work, I spent some years in the TV-business and joined national radio in 2001. Since then I have covered professional football, tennis and ice-hockey for the Cologne-based WDR and all the other public radio stations in Germany (ARD).

In November 2007 I celebrated my 20th anniversary of sports-journalism as my first article appeared on my 18th birthday. For the last 14 years I have found a “second home” in South Africa. Right after my first trip to the country I felt a special commitment to Africa - and it has continued to the present day. The initial interest in South Africa´s beautiful nature and fascinating society / politics has turned into a much larger project incorporating “all” aspects of the “New South Africa”.

I was privileged to meet ordinary South Africans from all spheres of life up to the highest office: President Thabo Mbeki, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former President F.W. de Klerk, Judge Johan Kriegler, 2010 CEO Danny Jordaan, Benny McCarthy, Zapiro and so on.
